The artist has handed over the complete sum of his £25,000 Mercury Prize cash to the trust for venues, which works to protect the UK's independent music venues.

He was awarded the cheque on 16 October as his latest record People Watching was declared the outstanding release of the past year.

Fender has decided to donate the funds to the MVT, in recognition of the crucial part local spots played in his beginning days.

"I couldn't be pursuing this success if it hadn't been for all the performances I performed around the area, and further afield, when I was starting out," stated Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these locations have shut down – approximately 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

Recently, major artists such as the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the MVT in its attempts to support the industry, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which supports independent venues.

Fender also took part, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to support numerous grassroots venues across the UK.

The money assisted venues that were facing imminent closure due to difficulties caused by floods, blazes and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, conflicts and noise complaints.

Additional spaces obtained financial assistance in improving amenities and technical equipment that directly benefitted artists and fans.

"The concept that funds from concerts in large arenas backs the independent spots, where it begins for musicians like me, is just common sense," Fender has stated.

They are among the artists who gave their Mercury Prize funds to good causes

The musician is not the first artist to give his Mercury Prize funds to good deeds.

Back when they won the award in the year 1996 for their album Different Class, lead singer Cocker stated that the act would contribute their prize money to the organization War Child.

In 2002, musician Ms Dynamite divided her prize among multiple organizations, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I contributed a thousand pounds to the center, to their classes, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed better apparatus," the artist explained to a publication.

In recent years, they contributed their funds to the youth organization that developed their act, in addition to other independent music bodies.

And 1994 winners the group donated their award to a MS organization after a friend was diagnosed the illness.

"Winning was ample," said artist the singer. "The cash was the cherry on top but we could do without the extra, because we had the main prize. So our victory affected the lives of others."

Recently, the MVT announced it had rescued several local spots in south-east England, by transferring them to local control.

The Joiners in Southampton and The Croft in the city were bought under the Own Our Venues program, which is supported by a national body and music fans who purchase "stakes" in the venues.
