Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress After Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was drowned out under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had come out of the experience, including spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The team of pioneers also featured leaders in various fields.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
