According to data provided by Israel, a minimum of 98 Palestinians have perished while in custody starting from October 2023. A human rights group operating from Israel has indicated that the actual figure is probably significantly larger, due to numerous of missing people in Gaza.

Study Results

Updated Statistics

Israeli defense forces most recently revised data on deaths in detention for May 2024, and correctional authorities during September 2024. Investigators identified another 35 fatalities in detention following these periods and confirmed them with government bodies.

Although the overall count of deaths charted being much greater than other recent estimates, it likely omits the complete extent of Palestinian loss, as stated by the head of the detainee affairs unit.

“Although we are offering documentation for a greater figure of casualties than earlier indicated, this is not the entire story,” he explained. “We are certain that there are yet detainees who lost their lives in detention that we have not identified.”

Non-Combatant Fatalities

Classified official information indicates that the vast majority of incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza who died in detention were ordinary citizens, per a simultaneous examination.

In May of this year, a defense forces registry tracking all militants in Gaza, a roster of in excess of 47,000 named individuals, listed just 21 fatalities in detention. At that time, 65 individuals from Palestine from Gaza had lost their lives in detention.

An effort to charge others over a severe beating involving assault resulted in political demonstrations and the apprehension of Israel’s senior defense attorney, with the alleged perpetrators now demanding that allegations against them be withdrawn.

Lack of Accountability

“Despite this significant total of fatalities, throughout the conflict not one individual has been detained,” the official said. “There have been no indictments over any fatality.

“While these measures continue to be enforced, all Palestinian detainees in detention is in danger, also the those in good health, including the young ones who have no health problems.”

Notable Incidents

Certain fatalities in confinement have been widely reported, including a middle-aged hospital director who lost his life in confinement after a third of a year in confinement.

An inmate detained alongside the individual stated that he was taken to the exercise area by correctional officers just prior to his death, visibly injured and unclothed from the waist down. His corpse has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Additional detainees who perished in detention in Israel remain anonymous. Detention administrators and defense forces gave investigators with the total of casualties in custody, and basic additional information including the site where they perished, but without the prisoners’ names.

Recognition Difficulties
